Counseling & Mental Health Therapy

I offer 1:1 therapy sessions — either via video or in-office — for individuals navigating anxiety, disordered eating patterns, emotional overwhelm, and the mental stress that keeps them feeling stuck. These sessions are grounded in a clinical therapeutic relationship, which means they’re focused on deep emotional work and held within a confidential, supportive, and ethical framework.

Therapy is different from coaching — it’s about healing from the inside out with the guidance of a licensed mental health professional. I specialize in helping clients process, understand, and shift the patterns that are holding them back, so they can move from surviving to thriving.

Note: Therapy is currently only available to residents of South Dakota and Wyoming.

  • Coaching sessions mingled with mountain biking, gravel riding or bike packing. Biking in nature has energizing effects. From brisk single track to unhurried gravel riding the experience is up-lifting. These brain-boosting effects can give us more insight and clarity around our internal experiences. Riding for 30+ minutes and then taking a break to dive into life coaching topics can produce understanding and direction that doesn’t always happen as quickly with regular-style coaching sessions. Email me for more information. Pricing depends on your personal biking experience & time preference.

  • Coaching sessions mingled with paddle boarding, climbing, or ski/snowboarding. From relaxed paddle boarding to more intense bouts of climbing or ski/boarding, time outside creates a different brain-state conducive to finding more creative solutions to problems. During the activity period we take breaks to focus on the personal issues at hand and engage in a process to find solutions and create a plan of action that feels doable and aligned to your goals and values. Wherever you are on your path, I’ll meet you there — with therapy, coaching, and self-paced resources designed to support and uplift you every step of the way.

When seeking support for personal growth or challenges, it’s important to understand the differences between therapy and coaching so you can choose the right fit for your needs. While both involve collaboration and aim to help you thrive, their focus, scope, and methodologies differ significantly.

Coaching vs. Therapy

Therapeutic Relationship

  • Focus: Therapy centers on understanding and healing psychological and emotional wounds. It may include addressing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, or relational struggles.

  • Scope: Therapy often involves exploring past experiences, identifying patterns, and processing unresolved emotions. It supports clients in building self-awareness and developing coping strategies.

  • Approach: Therapists are trained in evidence-based interventions and may use approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, or psychodynamic techniques.

  • Qualifications: Therapists must hold a state license and are ethically bound to practice within their scope of competence. They are also trained to recognize and address mental health diagnoses.

  • Goal: The goal of therapy is healing, emotional regulation, and improved mental health.

A therapeutic relationship is a professional relationship with a licensed mental health professional designed to address emotional, mental, and behavioral health challenges. It focuses on healing, resolving past trauma, and improving mental well-being.

Coaching Relationship

  • Focus: Coaching concentrates on personal or professional growth, helping clients clarify goals, develop strategies, and enhance performance.

  • Scope: Coaches focus on the present and future, guiding clients toward achieving specific outcomes, such as career success, weight loss, or improved relationships. Coaching does not address mental health diagnoses or past trauma.

  • Approach: Coaches use motivational techniques, goal-setting frameworks, and accountability tools to help clients stay on track.

  • Qualifications: Coaching certifications vary, and coaches are not required to hold a state license.

  • Goal: The goal of coaching is to empower clients to take action, achieve tangible results, and create meaningful change in their lives.

A coaching relationship is a partnership with a trained professional that focuses on achieving specific goals, building skills, and optimizing performance. Coaching is future-oriented and emphasizes action and accountability.

FAQs

Here are some honest answers to the questions I hear most often — so you can make the choice that feels right for you.

  • That’s a great question, and you’re definitely not alone in asking it. In general, therapy is best for those looking to work through emotional pain, trauma, anxiety, or disordered patterns that are interfering with daily life. Coaching is better suited for those focused on habit-building, mindset work, or specific goals like healthy weight loss and identity transformation.

Still not sure? Request an appointment and I’ll help you figure out what’s right for you.

  • Yes — but only through coaching, not therapy.

Because I’m a licensed therapist in South Dakota and Wyoming, I can only offer therapy services to residents of those states. Coaching, however, is available to clients anywhere in the U.S. and does not require a mental health diagnosis.

  • Not at all. Coaching clients do not need a diagnosis, and even in therapy, many of my clients come in simply seeking more peace, clarity, or support — whether or not they’ve been formally diagnosed with something like anxiety, depression, or an eating disorder. We'll meet wherever you are and build from there.

  • Therapy is a clinical relationship focused on emotional healing, mental health, and deeper inner work — often related to anxiety, trauma, disordered eating, or relationship patterns. Coaching is more future-focused and action-oriented. We’ll work on habits, mindset, identity shifts, and goal-setting to help you create the changes you want in your everyday life.

That said, in therapy sessions, I often integrate coaching-style strategies — like behavior change tools, accountability, and goal-setting — when it’s clinically appropriate. Both approaches are powerful and personalized. It just depends on what kind of support you're looking for.

  • The easiest way to begin is by requesting an appointment. Once I hear from you, I’ll guide you through the next steps based on your goals and location.

  • I specialize in supporting women who are navigating anxiety, disordered eating or binge eating patterns, emotional overwhelm, and a sense of feeling stuck. Many of my clients are high-functioning on the outside but struggling silently on the inside. I also work with those wanting to reconnect with themselves, release shame, and build emotional resilience from the ground up.

  • Both options are available! I offer in-office sessions for clients located near my practice, as well as secure video sessions for those who prefer the comfort and flexibility of virtual care. We'll choose the format that works best for your lifestyle and comfort.

  • For therapy clients I can submit your appointments through your insurance, however, it is up to you to understand your benefits through your insurance company and what they will cover.

  • While every client is different, coaching typically helps you build healthier habits, shift your mindset, increase self-awareness, and move toward your wellness goals with greater consistency. For many, this includes sustainable weight loss, improved relationship with food, greater energy, and a stronger sense of personal alignment.

  • Each package is designed to offer a different level of structure and support:

    • 1:1 Coaching Sessions are single, deep-dive sessions for personalized guidance.

    • Weekly Check-In Plan includes an initial session + short weekly accountability calls.

    • Email-Based Coaching gives you flexible, written support throughout the month via email.

  • For the Weekly Check-In Plan, I ask for a 2-month minimum to give you time to build momentum and see real progress. The Email Coaching Plan is month-to-month, and 1:1 sessions can be booked individually whenever you need them. I want you to feel supported — not stuck in a contract.

  • Outdoor sessions are walking or hiking-based coaching sessions held in natural settings. They’re ideal for those who feel most grounded or clear-minded in nature — or who are craving a break from screen-based life. Whether we’re walking a trail or simply spending time in the fresh air, these sessions invite movement, reflection, and emotional processing in a calm, natural environment.

  • Not at all. We’ll match the pace and trail difficulty to your comfort level. This isn’t a fitness test — it’s about creating space for clarity and connection. If you prefer a slow walk, that’s perfect. If you enjoy more of a hike, we can do that too. The focus is on the coaching conversation, not physical performance.
